DECEMBER 1531
Introduction
The apparitions of Our Lady, the Virgin of Guadalupe to Juan Diego, the miraculous stamping of her Holy image on the humble ayate of her seer and her message of love for us have as their main purpose to announce her beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to the peoples who inhabited the “new world”.
For us, in the twenty-first century, this message renews the joyful proclamation of Jesus Christ, Son of God and Son of Mary, and the closeness of the love of the Blessed Virgin in her invocation of Guadalupe.
First Apparition: Saturday, December 9 in the early morning.
Juan Diego hears bird songs. They call him by his name, he climbs to the top of the Tepeyao hill and sees the Girl who orders him to go to the Bishop to ask him for a temple on the plain. “My little son, the most beloved: I am the perfect Virgin Mary ever Mother of the most true God… I very much want you to be kind enough to build me my little temple… There I will always be ready to listen to their crying, their sadness, to purify, to heal all their different miseries, their sorrows, their pains.”
Second Apparition: Saturday, December 9 at approximately 5 p.m.
Juan Diego returns to the summit and reports the Bishop’s disbelief and asks him to choose another messenger. But the Virgin confirmed him in his mission and ordered him to insist the next day. “My little son, the youngest, it is indispensable that it be entirely by your intervention that my desire be carried out. I beg you very much, and I rigorously command you, that tomorrow you go again to see the Bishop. And make my will very plain to you, that I may make my temple which I ask of you.”
Third Apparition: Sunday, December 10 at about 3 p.m.
Again at the summit. Juan Diego refers to his second interview with the Bishop. He still does not believe him and orders him to ask the Lady for some sign. The Virgin orders Juan Diego to return to the hill the next day to receive the sign she will give him. “That is well, my little son, the most beloved. Tomorrow you will come here again so that you can bring to the High Priest the proof, the sign he asks of you. With that he will immediately believe you and will not distrust you at all.” Juan Diego does not return due to the illness of his uncle Juan Bernardino.
Fourth apparition: Tuesday, December 12 very early in the morning
Faced with the seriousness of his uncle, Juan Diego leaves for Mexico to look for a priest. He went around the hill so that the Virgin would not find him. But she goes out to meet him, reassures him of his uncle’s illness: “I give you the full assurance that he has already healed” She sends him to the summit for the roses that will be the sign. On his return, the Virgin said to him: “Dearest son, these different flowers are the proof, the sign that you will take to the Bishop. On my part, you will tell her to please see my desire in her, and with that, execute my will.”
Fifth Apparition: Tuesday, December 12 very early in the morning
At the same time that she appears to Juan Diego, she appears to Juan Bernardino, uncle of the seer, in his house she cures him of his illnesses and tells him her name and asks that from now on, “her precious image be called, she be known as the EVER-VIRGIN SAINT MARY OF GUADALUPE”.
Stamping on the Tilma: Tuesday, December 12 at noon
In the house of Bishop Fray Juan de Zumárraga, Juan Diego shows the roses that he carried in his ayate, a sign given by the Virgin. “He unfolded his tilma, where he carried the flowers. And so, at the same time that the different precious flowers were scattered, at that very moment, the venerated image of the ever-Virgin Mary, Mother of God, suddenly appeared in the humble ayate, just as we now have the joy of venerating her in what is her favorite home, her temple of Tepeyac.”
